Native claro walnut with alternating stripes of face grain maple. Stunning. English walnuts are a major agriculture crop in California and when orchards decline in productivity they are removed and replanted. English walnuts are typically grafted onto the roots of native California black walnut (Claro walnut) to make the English walnut tree more resistance to soil born diseases. Maple used in the boards are harvested from urban ornamental maple trees in Chico, California. Because I use non dimensional reclaimed lumber, it’s challenging to produce boards with the exact same dimensions without wasting material, thus boards widths vary slightly. Claro walnut is rare and absolutely stunning.
